Shared Steps - Shared Sounds: Embodied Music-Making and Collective Creativity
Date & Time
Tuesday, July 28, 2026, 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM
Description
This participatory workshop invites participants to express through music and movement as interconnected forms for collective expression and co-creation. It proposes a multidisciplinary approach to music-making practices within community and educational contexts. Rooted in embodied and participatory pedagogies, Shared Steps - Shared Sounds invites music educators and facilitators to engage in collective, movement-based musical processes that foreground the body as a site of (not-)knowing, (re-)discovering, and (non-)belonging.Drawing upon concepts from community music, Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis, and embodied music practices, the workshop situates music-making as a shared and relational act that emerges from collective creativity. During the practical part of the workshop, participants will explore co-creation through activities that involve improvisation, composition, creating and interpreting graphic scores and movement-based explorations. A reflective discussion will accompany the practical exploration, in order to complement the lived experience and contribute to the collective understanding of the process. Through the workshop, participants will acquire adaptable tools and insights for integrating embodied music-making and collective creativity into their teaching and/or facilitation. This approach emphasizes process over product, valuing exploration and experimentation over fixed musical material, as pathways to deeper musical engagement. By fostering awareness of how the body participates in listening, responding, and shaping musical interactions, the workshop aims to enhance musical understanding and strengthen group cohesion.Shared Steps - Shared Sounds ultimately questions how embodied, participatory music-making can act as a bridge between individuals and communities, between inner experience and collective creativity, and between artistic practice and education. It offers a space for educators to reimagine the role of movement and embodiment in music learning, fostering inclusivity, connection, and a sense of belonging within educational and community music settings.
