Experiencing Korean Drumming Through the NCAS Artistic Processes: A Hands-On Workshop with Samulnori
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 10:50 AM - 11:50 AM
Description
This interactive workshop will introduce participants to Korean drumming (samulnori) through a curriculum module aligned with the four categories of the National Core Arts Standards (NCAS): Connecting, Responding, Creating, and Performing. Participants will experience the cultural, historical, and musical significance of Korean percussion while actively engaging in hands-on drumming activities. The workshop will begin with an introduction to Korean drumming traditions, including a brief history and discussion of the social impact of pungmul and samulnori, highlighting the Connecting category of NCAS. Participants will then watch a short video excerpt of Korean drumming alongside a live demonstration by the presenters. This will be followed by guided reflection and discussion, addressing the Responding category.Next, participants will engage in active learning by playing authentic Korean percussion instruments. Using the traditional pedagogical method of ipjangdan (oral rhythmic patterns), participants will learn to internalize a Korean rhythmic cycle. This process will be deepened through the introduction of garakbo, a Korean rhythmic notation system, and a comparison with Western staff notation. This discussion will encourage participants to consider both cultural specificity and cross-cultural connections in music literacy. In alignment with the Creating category, participants will then work in small groups to generate their own rhythms within the framework of Korean rhythmic cycles. This improvisatory component will allow participants to explore creativity while grounding their work in cultural practice. Finally, under the Performing category, participants will come together to play a traditional Korean rhythm as an ensemble, integrating both the traditional rhythmic structure and the participant-created rhythmic sections. The collective performance will provide an immersive understanding of the energy, collaboration, and artistry that characterize Korean drumming. The workshop will conclude with a reflective discussion in which presenters share their experiences of integrating Korean drumming into their own classrooms and music education contexts. A Q&A session will invite participants to consider how Korean drumming can be adapted to their own teaching environments, fostering intercultural understanding and expanding the diversity of music curricula.By engaging participants in authentic practice, reflection, and creation, this workshop will demonstrate how Korean drumming can be meaningfully incorporated into music education. Participants will leave with practical strategies, a sample curriculum module, and inspiration to broaden their teaching through global music traditions. Keywords: Korean drumming, culturally responsive pedagogy, curriculum integration
