Name
Musical Narratives of Care: Infant Musicking at Home and in the Classroom
Date & Time
Thursday, July 30, 2026, 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM
Description
This interactive workshop invites participants to explore how infant musicking unfolds across home and classroom contexts and how family-based musical practices can enrich early childhood music education. Based on a cross-cultural qualitative study conducted in a metropolitan city on the west coast of the United States and a Mediterranean country, the session draws upon the frameworks of musical parenting (Koops, 2020) and funds of knowledge (González, Moll & Amanti, 2005) to highlight the relational, cultural, and developmental aspects of infants’ musical lives. The research revealed how parents act as co-constructors of musical meaning, using music to nurture identity, emotional expression, social connection, and growth. Infants were found to transform classroom songs into personalized rituals at home, while family musicking practices enriched and informed classroom engagement. This reciprocal interplay demonstrates how early childhood music education is enriched when it bridges the musical worlds of home and school.Participants will engage in hands-on activities adapted from those shared with families in the study. These include infant-centered interactive songs, movement activities that engage the infant’s senses and motor skills, and instrumental exploration that exemplify communicative musicality and responsive interaction. Through experiential participation, reflection, and guided discussion, attendees will consider how such activities can cultivate belonging, empathy, and creativity within their own educational contexts. The session emphasizes the educator’s role in recognizing families’ cultural and musical practices as pedagogical resources that support inclusive, relationship-based learning.Bringing together theory and practice, this workshop will present strategies for integrating home-based musical knowledge into classroom routines, fostering continuity and cultural responsiveness. Drawing on narrative inquiry and ethnographic portraits from the study, we will examine how early musicking provides insight into infants’ agency and the emotional nuances present in caregiving. This workshop positions music as an expression of care and a means of cultural connection. Through guided activities and discussion, participants will deepen their understanding of how infants, families, and educators co-create musical experiences that affirm identity, sustain relationships, and nurture holistic development within diverse early childhood settings.
