1273 - "Walking-with" as a practice of professional care with self and others
Date & Time
Friday, July 31, 2026, 10:50 AM - 11:50 AM
Description
Getting from one place to another can be mindful, mindless, or something in the middle (e.g., Hạnh, 2012). Whether walking, running, hobbling, or wheelchairing, the journey can elicit moments for personal and professional reflection. A professional development activity we presenters call walking-with is a strategy intended to focus music teacher educators and in-service teachers on the power of moving together. The late Buddhist monk and peace activist Thích Nhất Hạnh (1926-2022) made a practice of paying close attention to his walking as an aspect of his spiritual routine, bringing attention to mindfulness-in-every-step as a way of being in the world (Hạnh, 2015). On the surface, his ideas centered on walking and walking meditation are not revolutionary; however, a presence of mind for which he advocated brought attention to how humans move between places (e.g., car to office). Although being able to walk alone with one’s own thoughts and feelings is a vital facet of Hanh’s practice, he shared that walking with others is vital, noting that “[t]o be really means to inter-be….Interbeing is the teaching of the Buddha that everything is made by and made up of everything else” (Hạnh, 2009, p. 70, italics added).Responding to the 2026 ISME World Conference theme of Unity in Music Education, our workshop centers on music teacher education and in-service teacher education (e.g., leadership activities). We will welcome participants into a space that highlights mindfulness, walking, and togetherness as practices of professional development. Our 50-minute engagement will focus on walking together as professional self-care, caring for and with others, and being cared for. Inspired by Karin Hendricks’s (2023) edited volume The Oxford Handbook on Care in Music Education, we presenters call this practice walking-with. Attendees will walk or move together, at whatever comfort ability, as an act of interbeing to support each other’s professional learning in music educational settings. This workshop will draw from Hạnh’s (2015) How to Walk and Kerascoët’s (2018) picture book I Walk With Vanessa, inviting attendees into a conjoined walking activity where our minds, bodies, spirits, and music-making might intersect in solidarity, respect, and support for and with each other’s professional lives.
