Name
Using the Whole Body to Enhance Piano, Instrumental and Vocal Performance Skills
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 11:50 AM - 12:50 PM
Description
The complexities of high level music performance exert enormous demands on the intellect, to the point where the body can, sadly, suffer neglect. When the pianist develops a fuller awareness of the whole body’s participation, the music blooms in its resonance, color, power, agility, and emotional depth. Freedom from interfering parasitic contractions brings a stronger sense of self, a deeper physical, intellectual and emotional availability.
This workshop addresses participants’ concerns from the point of view of the Feldenkrais Method - a somatic, experiential learning process designed to enhance body-mind connection and improve movement efficiency, coordination, and flexibility.
Feldenkrais uses slow, mindful, and gentle movements, often exploring unusual patterns to break habits. The methodology focuses on "organic learning" by increasing self-awareness of muscular effort rather than forced exercise or repetition. The methodology applies principles from physics, biomechanics, martial arts (like Judo), as well as psychology.
Piano Somatics applies the principles of Feldenkrais Method to piano playing, focusing on skeletal alignment, neuromuscular re-education, and conscious movement to eliminate tension, prevent injury, and enhance artistic expression. The methodology replaces passive relaxation with active "choreography," using mindful, small-scale movements to optimize how the body produces sound.
This workshop expands Piano Somatics to a wider domain, Musical Performance Somatics, distilling out specific aspects of the Feldenkrais Method most relevant to any performing musician, linking specific movements and states of the body to specific sonorities, musical inflections, articulations, emotions, and decisions about phrase shape and orchestration for any instrument.
The physical histrionics sometimes seen in performance are an unsuccessful search for moving stability. Musical Performance Somatics cultivates a sober, quiet demeanor that anything but inert. A living inner responsiveness, a balanced readiness to move allows each part of the self to participate to an appropriate and exact degree in the complex movements of musical performance.
In this workshop I will listen to a short musical performance, then discuss the issues with the player before offering Feldenkrais-style interventions while they interact with their instrument. Members of the audience will also be guided through an Awareness Through Movement lesson, exploring strategies particular to musical performance.
This type of education is multi-dimensional addressing improvement not only in the intellectual but also in the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions - building bridges between all the different parts of oneself to develop, harmoniously, a sense of unified musical Being.
