All Strings Considered: Pedagogical Strategies for Engaging Multi-Age and Multi-Level Ensembles
Date & Time

Description
In my revised submission, I have addressed the reviewer’s comments to include a brief outline of the workshop flow, in addition to specific examples of materials that will be shared. I have also included two learning outcomes for attendees.
When leading community string programs, after-school programs, youth orchestras, or group classes, string instructors are likely to acquire diverse learners at a variety of technical/musical proficiencies and ages in large group settings. As instructors, how do we create an inclusive string program culture where our students feel engaged and a sense of belonging regardless of their playing level? How do we cultivate a community where students develop increased self-efficacy and feel motivated to take on mentor/mentee relationships with their peers? How do we create group activities that can be engaging for students at multiple ages?
Within this session, participants will acquire an understanding of how to adhere to individualized student needs within a large string group context, while collectively working towards long-term performance goals. The workshop will begin with a variety of innovative rehearsal strategies that can be adapted for different levels of student proficiencies, including some of the following: scaffolding through pizzicato and modifications of bowings, using the body to internalize posture and rests, creating engaging activities for review pieces, and inviting more advanced students to explore shifting or stylistic bow strokes. In the next portion of the workshop, we will discuss and explore strategies for choosing accessible repertoire, including tips for arranging simplified parts or more advanced parts, in addition to characteristics in repertoire that should be considered when programming a concert. Repertoire selection examples will also be discussed in the session with the opportunity for attendees to share personal experiences. The final portion of the workshop will feature a variety of collaborative activities (e.g., drama games, improvisation, and composition ideas) that develop a cohesive community of learners while encouraging mentor/mentee relationships
Throughout the workshop, I will present findings from my SSHRC-funded research in addition to personal teaching experiences leading a multi-level/multi-age string program. The hope is that this session will inform instructors of the challenges and benefits associated with diverse learners in a large group context, present innovative pedagogical strategies that can be implemented in a classroom or community music program, and empower music educators with the knowledge necessary to choose accessible repertoire, arrange parts, and engage diverse learners in unique instructional contexts. An open forum discussion will also provide attendees with the opportunity to contribute to the valuable conversation.
