Interactions between Music Education and Cognition
Date & Time

Description
This workshop aims to provide basic knowledge about musical cognition, based on the presentation of the main cognitive functions involved in music learning, drawing on concepts from cognitive psychology as they relate to music. To this end, the specific objectives are: to introduce basic notions of musical cognition; to present the main cognitive functions implicated in musical learning; and to carry out musical activities that employ these functions. Practical activities will be proposed to allow participants to apply theoretical knowledge through musical exercises that can later be implemented in the classroom. The material used during the workshop will be available at its conclusion to facilitate participants’ understanding and application of the concepts addressed in their own teaching contexts. This workshop is mainly intended for pre-service music teachers and primary and secondary music teachers. Starting from the idea that we are all cognitive beings, acquiring knowledge in this field can help educators better understand students’ behavior in the classroom and assist in solving problems in this context. As Viviane Louro (2024, p. 5) states, “educators need to understand how the brain functions in relation to learning in order to design interventions, strategies, or materials that work more efficiently and appropriately in each situation, whether or not the student has a diagnosis.” Therefore, offering knowledge about cognition and addressing the cognitive functions directly related to different brain areas could help current and future teachers to conduct their classes more effectively. The workshop will be organized as follows: 1) Presentation of introductory notions of cognitivism to encourage reflection on the meaning of the term “cognition”; 2) Presentation of the main cognitive functions related to musical learning, and 3) Application of this knowledge through practical musical activities to be carried out during the workshop. We will use different music learning situations and analyze each one using the previous cognitive knowledges presented during the workshop. All the activities proposed will be adapted for an international audience and offer practical advices on how to be used in diverse settings. For the implementation of this workshop, audiovisual equipment, a whiteboard, markers, and an eraser will be required. Through this initiative, we hope to raise participants’ awareness of the importance of acquiring cognitive knowledge for their work as music education teachers in schools and other educational institutions.
