Name
Inclusive Choral Pedagogy for Trans and Gender Expansive Singers
Date & Time
Thursday, July 30, 2026, 2:50 PM - 3:50 PM
Description
Trans and gender expansive (TGE) singers deserve safe and empowering spaces to engage in high-quality choral music experiences. Drawing in part from their own qualitative and voice science research, presenters will provide context and practical suggestions for working with students who inhabit a variety of spaces among gender identity and gender expression continuums (Author 1, 2022, 2024; Author 2, 2021). TGE students often place their trust in choral music teachers, with whom they have developed a deep bond over time. It is essential, then, for supportive teachers to understand how issues of gender play out in formal and informal choral spaces. As choirs often are safe spaces for many types of diversity, it is vital that we consider singers’ lived gender identities and expressions and how they influence the choral experience. This interactive session will explore practical, science-informed, and research-based strategies to navigate the increasingly complex gender landscape from sociological (e.g., uniform policies) and musical (e.g., re-voicing choral music) perspectives. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to engage with the Flexible Fach Gender Affirming Singing Protocol (FFP), which is founded upon the primary tenets of modern voice science (McCoy, 2019; Author 1, 2024; Ragan, 2020; McKinney, 2005; Miller, 1996) and gender affirming voice and communication therapy (GAVCT) practiced by speech-language pathologists (Adler, Hirsch, and Pickering, 2019; Block, Papp, and Adler, 2019; Oates, 2019; Adler and Antoni, 2019; Kozan and Hammond, 2019 McCoy, 2019). When combined with Line Recombination, these methods are essential to supporting TGE singers’ vocal, emotional, and mental well-being in both solo and choral singing. Presenters will demonstrate science-informed vocal techniques related to posture, onset, articulation, registration, and resonance to provide a healthy and affirming experience for TGE singers (Hearns & Kremer, 2018; Kozan & Hammond, 2019; Sauerland, 2022). TGE collaborators’ stories and lived experiences will provide additional clarity for the application of these science-informed vocal techniques in choral music spaces. Learning from trans and gender expansive community members can help expand choral director-educators' sense of inclusive and equitable music making practices (Anzaldúa et al., 2022). Workshop participants will reflect on their own choral settings, engage in discussion of policies, consider instructional strategies, and practice healthy group vocal techniques that will empower singers from all age groups with a deep sense of belonging.
