Musical Tinkering with AI: A Hands-On Workshop for Music EducatorsWorkshop ProposalThis interactive workshop invites music educators to experience artificial intelligence as a playground for tinkering pedagogy in music learning and teaching through playful, hands-on sound-making. Grounded in the maker movement (Blikstein, 2018; Resnick & Rosenbaum, 2013) and inspired by constructivist and constructionist approaches (Piaget, 1972; Papert & Harel, 1991), participants will explore how trial, error, and iteration can revitalize classroom practice.Participants will engage in a series of short, hands-on activities using AI-enhanced tools for composition, improvisation, vocal exploration, rhythmic interaction, and analytical listening. These activities will highlight how AI can function as a tinkering partner—supporting playful creativity, motivating flow states (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990), and reframing technology as a pedagogical medium rather than an end in itself (Mishra & Koehler, 2006).Through this, they will encounter the core principles of tinkering in music: valuing process over product, cultivating student agency and motivation through open-ended tasks, reframing technology as a servant of pedagogy (TPACK framework; Mishra & Koehler, 2006), and embracing the inherently tinkering-like nature of musicianship—listening, experimenting, adjusting, and sharing.The workshop builds on findings from a study pedagogical interventions in higher music education, which showed that AI-supported tinkering fosters active student ownership, encourages risk-taking, and aligns music-making with the broader maker movement (Resnick & Rosenbaum, 2013). Participants will both experience these interventions and discuss practical strategies for integrating AI-based tinkering pedagogy into their own classrooms.Finally, the session will introduce the HI-AI-MI framework, developed in our faculty as an ethical compass for educational innovation: Human Intelligence guiding Artificial Intelligence in service of Musical Intelligence. This framework ensures that AI enriches, rather than diminishes, creativity, embodiment, and musical identity.Takeaways: Participants will leave with concrete ideas, sample activities, and reflective guidelines for designing AI-enhanced tinkering experiences in music education—embracing the messy, playful, and deeply human process of “messing about with sound.”
