Name
The Music Teacher’s Role in Students' Mental Health
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 11:50 AM - 12:50 PM
Description
The American Academy of Pediatrics declared a national emergency in youth mental health in 2021, after Covid exacerbated already rising rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality in young people. Independent music teachers are often the first to notice and respond to changes in student wellbeing. Yet, music teachers typically do not receive mental health training and are often unsure of their responsibilities and boundaries with students. In this practical yet research-based workshop, two researchers in musician wellness and pedagogy will share strategies for helping students with mental health challenges. After presenting signs of common mental health issues, the 8 dimensions of wellness, and the ALGEE framework used in Mental Health First Aid courses, they will share practical tools such as breathwork, affirmations, journaling, and mindfulness. In addition, the presenters will discuss trauma-sensitive teaching and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) as well as “microtraumas” that transfer students might carry from previous training. Techniques like drumming and movement can help students with past trauma, and teachers will learn how to adapt practical tools such as breathwork and mindfulness for these students, such as not closing the eyes and asking permission for touch.Acknowledging the lack of music teacher training to diagnose or counsel students, they will also share resources and tips for when to seek parental and professional help. Using scenarios and sample language, teachers will have the opportunity to role-play skills with partners. Through this process, teachers will also learn how to help their students build resilience skills that facilitate growth and perseverance.
