Description
This workshop presentation introduces the Korean Percussion Ensemble that has integrated traditional Korean pungmul and samulnori into the U.S. public school instrumental music setting. With a focus on differentiated instruction within the traditional frameworks of the art form, we have explored multiple ways to foster inclusivity and engagement to meet the needs of a wide range of learners. This session will highlight how we created our ensemble, acquired authentic Korean instruments, and engaged and retained our students through our curricular and extracurricular offerings. This will also include the initial challenges and how we have developed into our current challenges after several years of operating.Through our findings, we have discovered accessibility to be a major roadblock when introducing this material beyond our ensemble. In order to provide educators with a practical tool to take into their classrooms without the constraints of instruments and prior background knowledge, we will present four learning modalities: visual, auditory, reading and writing, and kinesthetic. As we continued to adapt instruction for diverse learners, it has become evident that Western rhythm notation may not be the most effective tool for all, and we must look to find new ways to connect to those in need. Korean pungmul and samulnori percussion, traditionally taught by rote, utilizes a system of boxes and dots representing meter and number of strokes per beat. Bringing this visual tool into our classrooms can provide a more tangible and authentic way of teaching music through its simplicity and practicality in elementary general music through high school instrumental ensembles. The presentation will conclude with reflections on our experiences and assessments through our student performances at concerts, clinics, and university collaborations. We will also share our next steps and propose strategies that can be applied to various classroom settings in hopes of engaging all students through a lens of culturally responsive instruction.
