Rethinking Pedagogy: ECME’s contribution to expanding professionalism
Date & Time
Friday, July 31, 2026, 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Description
Background: The UNESCO report: "A new social contract for education" ( 2021) advocate for cooperation, collaboration, and solidarity as central pedagogical principles and curricula that emphasize ecological, intercultural and interdisciplinary learning that supports students to access and produce knowledge while also developing their capacity to critique and apply it. Professional teaching knowledge, in this context, is cultivated through an ongoing dialogue between theory and practice. It evolves individual and collective reflection on expanding repertoire of experiences. In the realm of music education, Westerlund and Gaunt (2021) argue that expanding professionalism requires a paradigm shift: moving beyond the traditional emphasis on technical mastery and skills of western music towards more diverse, engaged, digital, and democratized contexts and reflexive practices. They emphasize the importance of boundary crossing, collaboration with other disciplines and societal sectors, and more inclusive and participatory approaches. Professional training for a specialist teacher in early childhood music education deals with methods, approaches, and pedagogies, as well as interactions and connections between the child, his/ hers humane and natural environment and music. Early childhood music teaching fosters connections between nature, society, and individual growth. Integrating these elements helps children see their place in a connected world. Through play and collaboration, music nurtures empathy, inclusion, and sustainability, shaping values of democracy and communal ties.Aim: To explore opportunities for interdisciplinary connections between music education, the environment and the community in order to strengthen its power in shaping social and environmental consciousness and community involvement. In this workshop, we will look into the interdisciplinary connections between Early Childhood Music Education (ECME) and other fields such as social and environmental studies, highlighting how ECME principles can inform broader educational and societal contexts. Through concrete examples, such as "green kindergartens" that influence recycling awareness and campaign for schools and kindergartens which encourage the preservation of wildflowers, we will illustrate the far-reaching impact of early childhood education beyond the classroom. We will examine how interdisciplinary approaches can enrich music education by creating connections with diverse fields such as literature, visual arts, mathematics, technology, geography, language acquisition, etc., and look into the ways in which diverse forms of collaboration with communities and practitioners can enrich pedagogical practices and promote professional growth. Participants will engage in both small-group and plenary discussions, as well as creative collaborative activities designed to foster dialogue, innovation, and shared learning.
