Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 4:05 PM - 5:05 PM
Description
Collaboration and connection are part of the musical spaces we find ourselves in through Zoom, Spatial, and numerous virtual and augmented reality applications (VR/AR) in music classrooms for both K-12 and university level students. While music educators and researcher-authors present composing and songwriting opportunities with students through music education, music history, theory, arranging and tech courses, there are those who are beginning to invite students to create music in global environments most reflective of the interests of students (Kaschub, 2024).Between 1917 and 1942, Coleman (1917; 1922; 1931) taught creative music-making and wrote about her work. Her experiments were completed in public schools and through the Association for Childhood Education (see Southcott, 2009). Additionally, during the twentieth century, textbooks designed for music teachers have included chapters related to creative music projects and composing with children (Pierce, 1959; Reimer, 1970, 2003; Snyder, 1957; 1962; Timmerman, 1958; Upitis, 1992; Wright, 1941; Harrison, 1983; Campbell & Scott-Kasner, 1995). More recently since 2000, Paynter (2000) and Kratus (2001) along with the collection of texts written by Kaschub & Smith (see 2009-2024) and music technology (Williams & Webster, 2022), With focus toward music educators working with creating and composition curricula in classrooms (Crawford, 2024) as well as her upcoming Beginning with Composition (Crawford, in process) discussion will engage novice and veteran music educators and professors. This symposium will support the work of music teaching and learning toward creativity in environments educators may use to connect students with each other as well as invite music educators to consider integrating creative lesson planning for even our youngest students and both least and most experienced musicians through in-person and virtual applications for global connection and unity in music education while building bridges for all.Presenting the creative works of young students (ages 4-21) from around the globe, this symposium will invite participants to discuss and share the creative work of young people they teach and have heard. As will be shown, one of the reasons we consider diversity in music teaching is to understand that not all exceptional music is from Eurocentric composers, creators, or schools but may be included in new works by all young people in all countries of all ages. Introduction to the International Alliance of Young Composers & Songwriters will share compositional presentations from around the world as examples of what educators may wish to extend. As well, applications such as Spatial, will be utilized to share works created and placed in VR spaces that may be of great interest when discussion turns to how can we interact with each other globally.
