Description
In world music education, Chinese music represents an essential yet often underrepresented tradition. You may wish to include Chinese music in your classroom as part of a well-rounded world music curriculum, or you may have Chinese ESL students whose cultural backgrounds you want to honor through culturally responsive teaching. However, teachers often face two challenges: a lack of well-researched, accessible resources, and materials that focus solely on singing rather than offering a more holistic experience, such as instrumental playing, movement, appreciation, etc. This workshop offers a practical starting point for those who are new to teaching Chinese music. Drawing on my cross-cultural teaching experiences, I developed the curriculum unit Sing a Song from My Hometown, which integrates world music pedagogy, culturally responsive teaching theories, and Orff-Schulwerk approaches. Through five interactive modules—singing, dancing, ensemble playing, appreciation, and sharing—you will explore Chinese music in multiple dimensions. Participants will receive a ready-to-use resource pack with videos and multimedia materials, making it easy to bring Chinese music into your classrooms. I'll also share extra resources for exploring traditional Chinese music to deepen your understanding of this profound art form. This isn't just a learning journey but a cultural expedition. Join us to discover how music education can bridge cultural differences and cultivate students' appreciation and respect for diverse musical cultures.
