Description
This workshop presents an innovative form of communication specifically suited to supporting learning and creativity in music education. The idiolect-based narrative interview (see Winkler, 2023; Fankhauser, 2024; functionality of the narrative: see Siegel, chapt. 31) was originally developed in the context of a psychosomatic short-term therapy (see Poimann, 2016, pp. 52-61; operationalisation: Cincera & Rentel in Oehlmann et al., 2023, pp. 381 ff.). Since the 1980s, it has been adapted for the use in educational contexts (Prof. Bruno Krapf, UZH, Zurich). Proven particularly effective in music education and performance coaching, both individually and in classes, it is currently taught at German- and Italian-speaking universities as part of the curricula for music education as well as in higher education and degree programmes for coaches and supervisors. One of the main methods of idiolectic is picking up individual used terms, signals, figurative expressions and the relating questioning in an open, non-judgemental and open-minded way. The exploratory, phenomenological, resource-oriented questioning stimulates reflection and autonomous problem-solving (Winkler, 2023; see also Collins & Loftus, 1975; Francken, 2016; for the use of metaphors, see Al-Azary & Katz, 2023; Arrais, 2009). This constructivist approach to supporting and strengthens learning processes, embodiment, and transfer process in self-regulated learning, and addresses directly the basic psychological needs (Deci & Ryan, 2000; Evans et al., 2013; Hattie, 2023, p. 380; Reeve & Chong, 2021). Idolectic can act catalytic for creative processes and may facilitate turning points in problem solving, for instance, in cases of stage fright. Empathic presence strengthen the quality of the relationship (see, for example, the synchronisation effects of Tschacher et al., 2018; 2024), promotes to express associated emotions, self-regulatory capacity through granulation (Tugade, Fredrickson & Feldman Barrett, 2004). The method is also suitable for qualitative research to capture authentic information (Bork, 2014).The workshop's objective is to teach participants the fundamental principles and demonstrate how the method operates through a model conversation and practical exercises. By trying it out for themselves, participants gain concrete experience of how it works. They will also experience its effect on the individual process. The workshop concludes with exchange of experiences and answers to any questions raised. The participants will receive basic texts in English on the method, which has so far mainly been practised in German-speaking countries.
