Name
Straighten Up and Fly Right: Jazz Movement and Lindy Hop in the K-8 U.S. Classroom
Date & Time
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 2:50 PM - 3:50 PM
Description
In this workshop for K-8 general music teachers I will share the music and movement used to incorporate dancing into my K-8 U.S. Jazz music curriculum. Bring your ‘dancing shoes’ because in this session we will first improvise movement using Laban’s locomotor /non-locomotor movements. Then, we will develop a “showstopper” performance in the workshop for grades K-2 with the Laban movements utilized earlier, as well as other social dance concepts. This partner dance is an extension of the text of a known Jazz song and makes use of the form of the music to create a performance. Finally, we will create an in-class performance of Lindy Hop dance moves, for the 4th through 8th grade classroom, using dance composition cards. Concluding the workshop will be a brief outline of conversations about how social dance in the African-American community continues to be a compelling force in music and dance in the United States. Resources for Laban movement, Jazz music, and Lindy Hop dance movement, as well as guidelines for social dance discussions will be shared. This U.S. focused workshop highlights the significant contributions of African American musicians and dancers in the creation of Jazz, social dance in the U.S., and all future musical genres. There will be practical and child-friendly activities for all teachers interested in incorporating Jazz into their music curriculums.
