Research Techniques Workshop: Critical Bibliography Skills
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 2:50 PM - 3:50 PM
Description
Strong research skills are essential not only for music scholars, but for educators, students, and performers. The backbone of all research is bibliography—the identification and synthesis of sources. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of music education, bibliographic skills are particularly essential in this field. In the modern digital context, researchers encounter a multiplicity of catalogues, databases, and metadata systems that can facilitate bibliographic research. Developing skills in this area not only facilitates the navigation of these tools, but also encourages self-reflective research. It can thus support engagement with diverse scholarly traditions and foster inclusive and critical research practices. This 50-minute workshop will present participants with strategies for using bibliographic tools, highlight approaches for globally informed scholarship, and foster dialogue about the meaning of bibliography in music education research. Led by an editor from Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM), the session will combine demonstration, guided exercises, and discussion. Participants will be introduced to selected online and subject-specific databases and strategies for conducting research in multiple languages and diversifying citations will be presented. The session will include an interactive activity, in which participants undertake their own online search or explore a bibliography. They will also discuss how citation practices can influence research and teaching.Participants will gain practical bibliographic skills and a deeper awareness of the implications of research practices. The workshop will also support emerging scholars, including graduate students, early-career researchers, and educators who wish to deepen their engagement with scholarship. It will demonstrate how bibliographic practices can serve as bridges between disciplines, languages, and traditions, when a researcher is equipped with the requisite skills.
