Description
In addition to cultivating the art of proper practice and performance skills, it is important that teachers encourage students to maintain physical and emotional wellness. During this session, we will discuss and demonstrate tools for wellness and strategies for implementation in the teaching studio. The first, posture, is often overlooked and, when not properly set, can lead to discomfort, strain, and sometimes injury. It is important that we teach our students how to balance themselves and place their instrument in a position that does not create any physical strain. From that departure point, students must focus on maintaining a straight back and loose limbs and fingers so that a relaxed and centered pose becomes the departure point for playing their instrument. Strategizing with violin and viola students, for example, to choose an appropriate should rest and teaching students how to approach a correct seated posture in orchestra and chamber music sessions are important skills to impart during lessons. The second type of wellness, emotional wellness, is rarely touched upon in the teaching studio. It should, however, be one of the focal points in lessons. For example, giving students tools to navigate stressful performance scenarios and teaching them how to manage time to allow relaxation and self-care is an important part of a teacher's role. Emotional health techniques are impactful tools that we need to teach our students, otherwise they could easily become burned out and overwhelmed. It is vital for teachers to model wellness to their students and cultivate the mentality that emotional and physical health do not just come naturally, they are learned techniques that can become effective tools. During this workshop we will discuss techniques such as mindful meditation, deep breathing, positive self-talk while practicing, and how to disengage from the instrument when not practicing. The many techniques covered in this session will ensure the physical and emotional health of your students and, in turn, assist with their creative process.
