Exploring the Korean Haegeum: Practical, Culturally Informed Strategies for the Classroom
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 4:05 PM - 5:05 PM
Description
With the globalization of the world, music educators face the challenge of embracing cultural diversity in their classrooms (Kang, 2016). However, there are limitations of content and pedagogy based on the hegemonic tendencies of the Western classical perspective in the practice of music education (Campbell, 2016; Mellizo et al., 2022). The musical content and pedagogy based on the 'culturally informed(Mellizo, 2020)' strategies can encourage the flourishing of cultural diversity and the dismantling of Western-centric practices in the music classroom. In light of this, the purpose of this workshop is to guide practical, culturally informed strategies by exploring the Korean traditional fiddle, haegeum. This workshop offers authentic experiences by providing hands-on opportunities to play the haegeum. And provides practical, culturally informed strategies using the coding haegeum for adaptation in the classroom. The session will unfold in three parts.1. Exploring the Haegeum, a Korean Traditional Fiddle. The participants will be invited to explore and understand the haegeum. The history, structure, and features of it will be explained thoroughly. The participant will then try to make sounds on the haegeum offered in the workshop.2. Playing the Korean Folk Song ‘Gang Gang Swollae’ with the Haegeum. The participants will try to play the Korean folk song ‘Gang gang swollae’ with the hageum using Korean traditional music pedagogy. Before playing the haegeum, the participants will learn three significant notes in this song first by utilizing Gueum(구음) to embody its expressions, and will then try to play it with the haegeum.3. Creating a New Collective Folk Song with Coding Haegeum. The participants will be guided to adapt the haegeum for the music classroom, utilizing practical and culturally informed strategies that incorporate technology. The coding haegeum could be an alternative way in a challenging environment where it is difficult to use an actual haegeum. The participants will be invited to create a new response part of the song following the Korean folk song form called ‘call and response(메기고 받는 소리)’ with the coding haegeum. A new folk song will be accomplished by collecting every response, and participants will engage in collective music using two kinds of haegeum. These attempts would contribute to celebrating and respecting cultural diversity in the music classroom, moving away from Western-centric practices.
