Ethical Considerations for Music Educators Undertaking Research with Those That They Teach
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 4:05 PM - 5:05 PM
Description
Music educators may choose to collect data from those that they teach to investigate the outcomes of their teaching and evaluate its effectiveness: this is particularly common among those designing programs to enhance aspects of musicians’ health and well-being. What is not yet clear is how commonly the ethical implications of collecting data in this way are considered. There is a notable lack of guidance - and corresponding deficiencies in publications - relating to ethical considerations for those undertaking research within music education settings, which indicates that this may not yet be considered a priority. In contrast, within disciplines such as Healthcare and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) there are reports on researchers’ and students' experiences, recommendations for ethical research, and frameworks that can be used to enhance ethical conduct. This workshop will begin with an overview of key ethical considerations for those collecting data from musicians in educational contexts (‘educator-researchers’). Participants will then have the opportunity to work collaboratively to discuss responses to the following questions:1. What can educator-researchers do to address conflicts of interest that arise as a result of collecting research data from those they are responsible for teaching?2. What can educator-researchers do to ensure that those they teach are treated with justice and respect when taking part in research?3. How can we ensure that high ethical standards are maintained throughout the design, conduct, and publication of research focusing on education? This workshop is of relevance to educators considering undertaking research to investigate their programs, researchers wanting to investigate the outcomes of educational programs, institutions enabling this research to take place, journal editors and reviewers who would like to enhance their ethical expectations, and musicians who would like to know what to expect of those leading combined education and research projects in this area. In light of the workshop leader’s background this session will focus to a certain extent on those working within musicians’ health and wellbeing, but the discussions will be relevant to all within music education.
