Date & Time

Description
BackgroundMusical participation for children and families is often dispersed across disconnected settings: school classrooms, occasional library programmes, and activities in community music clubs. Without purposeful coordination, these experiences remain fragmented and may exclude parents, careers, or local residents who could enrich the learning environment. Project-based learning (PBL) provides an adaptable framework for linking inquiry, creativity, and authentic outcomes, yet its application in music education—particularly across formal and informal sites—has lacked clear methodological guidance.Recent scholarship in community music highlights the value of sequenced project structures that integrate listening, experimentation, co-creation, and celebration. When schools, libraries, and community music clubs collaborate, they create hybrid learning journeys where children, adults, and educators explore sound and culture together, turning everyday listening into collective artistic practice. This workshop introduces a structured PBL pathway for sustaining such intergenerational engagement, emphasising inclusive strategies that use humour and visual play to reduce anxiety and foster belonging.Aims- Present a hybrid PBL framework for connecting schools, libraries, and community music clubs in inclusive projects.- Demonstrate how live performance can act as the celebration phase of PBL, inspiring participants of all ages.- Provide hands-on experience in designing playful music activities—including humour and safe face-painting—that invite families and residents to participate.Main ActivitiesMini-Presentation: explanation of the four-stage PBL cycle (Orientation → Exploration → Co-creation → Celebration) and evidence from recent research on hybrid music learning.Community Music Showcase: short pieces presented by music students and facilitators, with audience involvement through echo patterns, improvisation, or simple movement.Hands-On Lab: online connecting mixed-age groups design micro-projects linking school sessions, library storytelling or rehearsal areas, and music-club jam activities, with optional comic sketches or face-painting to stimulate creativity.Group Showcase & Reflection: teams give music performance, presenting their ideas, and performance in cultural sensitivity.Target AudienceMusic educators, schoolteachers, librarians, community musicians, early-childhood practitioners, youth workers, parents’ representatives, and researchers interested in participatory and intergenerational arts education.Expected OutcomesParticipants will:Recognise the value of hybrid, project-based pathways for inclusive music engagement across generations.Acquire a clear methodology for planning, facilitating, and evaluating projects that link schools, libraries, and community clubs.Experience the motivating role of live performance and playful activities in fostering confidence and belonging.Take away adaptable tools for launching or extending music initiatives that connect education, culture, and community.
