Name
The Resilient Voice: Strategies for Music Teachers
Date & Time
Tuesday, July 28, 2026, 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM
Description
Music teachers frequently face vocal fatigue or injury due to long days of speaking and singing. While the voice is resilient, hoarseness and voice loss—although common—need not be an expected result of the profession. This workshop demonstrates practical, evidence-informed strategies for assessing and maintaining vocal health for teachers across all levels and musical disciplines. Participants will explore key principles of vocology—the science and practice of voice habilitation—and how they support the health and longevity of all professional voice users: choral directors, general music teachers, voice teachers, band directors, singers, orchestra directors, and countless others. While traditional advice emphasizes rest and hydration, this session introduces specific, behavior-based methods tailored to each teacher’s voice use. Through interactive demonstrations, the presenter will guide attendees in evaluating ease of vocal production, distinguishing warmups from cooldowns, and sustaining baseline vocal function for both speech and singing. The workshop will also address procedures for navigating common challenges such as illness and seasonal allergies. In order to tailor the workshop to the group’s needs, the presenter will incorporate a pre- and post-session Q&A session, creating a collaborative, interactive environment focused on individual challenges and solutions. Participants will leave with actionable tools to help preserve their vocal health year-round.
