Sustainable Piano Playing: Mind-Body Approaches From East and West
Date & Time
Tuesday, July 28, 2026, 11:50 AM - 12:50 PM
Description
Playing-related injuries affect a majority of pianists, with studies indicating that over 80% of professional players experience repetitive strain injuries (RSI), tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or other musculoskeletal conditions. These issues often arise from biomechanical inefficiencies, intense practice habits, and psychological stress, leading to long-term physical strain and limiting artistic potential. This workshop offers an integrated, evidence-based approach to injury prevention that blends Western music medicine with traditional Chinese principles of movement and health.Participants will explore anatomy-based strategies for healthy technique alongside philosophies from Taiji (太极) and Qigong (气功), which emphasize balance, flow, and relaxed precision. Daoist ideas such as wu wei (effortless action) will serve as a conceptual bridge, showing how Chinese cultural wisdom aligns with Western ergonomic principles and modern neuroscience. Together, these perspectives create a holistic framework for sustainable musicianship. The session is designed to be highly interactive, with over half of the time devoted to experiential learning. After a concise overview of injury prevalence, anatomy, and risk factors, attendees will engage in guided self-assessments to evaluate posture, wrist angles, and muscle tension. Partner observation exercises will foster collaborative learning, helping participants identify and correct tension patterns in others. Demonstrations will highlight ergonomic approaches to common technical challenges, including octaves and arpeggios, while contrasting them with tension-inducing habits.Participants will also practice simple mindfulness strategies adapted from The Inner Game of Music, learning to shift focus from over-analysis to intuitive performance. The workshop concludes with a five-minute Taiji- and Qigong-inspired warm-up and cooldown routine designed for daily teaching and practice.Handouts and digital resources will provide participants with practical take-home materials, including a posture checklist, illustrated exercises, and a practice journal template. These tools empower educators to promote wellness in their studios and help performers sustain technical freedom and creativity over a lifetime.By integrating Eastern philosophy and Western science, this session emphasizes the universality of healthy movement principles across musical traditions. It aligns with ISME’s 2026 theme, Unity in Music Education: Building Bridges for All, by offering a culturally enriched, research-driven approach that supports artistry, inclusivity, and lifelong well-being for musicians worldwide.
