Name
Mental Training for Musicians: Practical Strategies for Instrumental Teachers and Students
Date & Time
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM
Description
This interactive workshop introduces music educators and piano students to a holistic mental training approach that integrates both psychological and physical strategies to enhance performance readiness, confidence, and wellbeing. The method is grounded in established techniques from both sport psychology and music pedagogy, organised into four interrelated categories: activation regulation, motivation regulation, regulation of emotions, and mental practicing. The workshop will combine research evidence with practical, hands-on exercises.Activation regulation - Achieving optimal arousal for performance through breathing techniques, relaxation exercises, and autogenic training. Participants will experience how short, targeted breathing patterns and guided autogenic suggestions can calm nerves, improve concentration, and prepare the mind and body for performance.Motivation regulation - Strengthening intrinsic motivation to sustain practice and prevent burnout. The workshop will explore goal-setting, positive self-talk, visualisation, and attribution training, with examples of how to reframe failure as an opportunity for growth by focusing on controllable factors such as effort and strategy.Regulation of emotions - Increasing awareness and attention control, transforming negative thoughts into constructive ones, and addressing perfectionism. Participants will try attention-shifting exercises used in sports psychology, learning to move comfortably between internal/external and narrow/broad attention modes depending on the demands of the music.Mental practicing - Visualising playing the instrument without physical contact to improve accuracy, memory, and interpretation. Guided exercises will demonstrate how to mentally rehearse entire pieces or specific passages, supporting skill retention and deepening musical understanding. The session will begin with a brief presentation of the research outcomes, including reduced performance anxiety, enhanced focus, and more consistent practice habits among the school-age participants. Each category will be demonstrated interactively, with opportunities for attendees to reflect on how the strategies can be adapted for their own students or practice contexts.By the end of the workshop, participants will have a ready-to-use toolkit of mental training exercises and practical tips for integrating these methods into everyday teaching and learning. This workshop aligns with ISME 2026’s focus on supporting the health and wellbeing of musicians, offering accessible, evidence-based strategies to foster confident and resilient performers from early learning stages to higher education.
