Description
Thought to be one of the greatest public health crises faced in over a generation, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic instigated unprecedented global disruption, profoundly altering societal norms, educational systems, and social interactions. Children, a particularly vulnerable demographic, experienced significant shifts in their daily routines, learning environments, and opportunities for social engagement. COVID-19 served to threaten not only the well-being of the general population but has impacted, and continues to impact, the very act of singing. Prior to March 2020, the idea of a world without singing would have been unimaginable. Although the pandemic is essentially behind us, what has the COVID-19 experience meant for participation in singing and in group singing — activities considered to be fundamental for healthy cognitive, physiological, emotional and social development?
With childhood agency and singing identity at the heart of From the Voices of Children (FVC) investigations, qualitatively oriented mixed-methods research conducted between 2022 and 2024 involving interviews with over 100 child collaborators has been designed to assess potential changes in children's perceived enjoyment, value, frequency of participation, and motivation related to singing, not only as connected to the pandemic, but in general terms.
Based on a framework composed of candid insights generously shared by the young FVC research collaborators, the ISME 2026 delegates in attendance will be introduced to FVC research questions, methodologies, conclusions and curricular applications through a dynamic workshop setting which includes active audience participation in pedagogically appropriate vocal exercises, singing games, suitable repertoire and strategies for the development of the child voice. At the conclusion of the workshop, a short FVC advocacy documentary film featuring child research participants which premiered in Canada in 2025 will be presented to workshop participants to prompt lively conversation and fulsome discussion as music educators around the globe collectively strive to understand, maintain and honour the voices of children and nurture a vital singing culture throughout the 21st-century and beyond.
