Name
Experience Latin America: Music, Movement, and Cultural Connection
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 1:50 PM - 2:50 PM
Description
Music and movement are inherently connected, and in the elementary music classroom, movement is both developmentally appropriate and pedagogically powerful. It helps children embody musical concepts, internalize rhythm, and explore expressive possibilities, while offering a sense of agency that actively engages both mind and body. When movement is meaningfully integrated into instruction, it fosters deeper emotional, social, and cognitive connections to music. This session presents a collection of joyful, movement-based music activities rooted in Latin American repertoire; all tied together by a unifying and engaging theme: animals native to Latin America. From the coquí frog of Puerto Rico to the jaguar of the Amazon, each song introduces students to a different animal and setting, using storytelling and play to draw learners into the music and its cultural context. This familiar theme helps spark curiosity, build continuity across lessons, and make cultural exploration accessible and exciting for young students.Integrating music, movement, and culture creates powerful opportunities for students to develop a global mindset and a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. As they move, sing, and play along with music from diverse Latin American traditions, students begin to understand that music is not only sound. Come explore how a playful, purposeful approach can inspire children to connect more deeply with music, themselves, and the world around them.
