Date & Time

Description
This interactive workshop introduces circle singing as a powerful and inclusive model of participatory music-making that supports musical fluency, spontaneous creativity, and social-emotional growth. Originally developed and popularized by Bobby McFerrin and Voicestra, circle singing is a vocal improvisation practice in which a leader creates musical patterns in real time, assigns them to sections of a circle, and layers them into evolving, polyphonic textures. Rooted in collaboration and community engagement, this practice centers process over product and emphasizes listening, risk-taking, empathy, and co-creation.In this workshop, participants will actively engage in circle singing through a progression of scaffolded activities that reflect three core pedagogical approaches: empirical, methodological, and culturally responsive. The empirical approach is based on the facilitator’s lived experience in circle singing sessions and emphasizes spontaneous music-making and the development of intuitive musical skills. The methodological approach draws from Roger Treece’s “CircleSongs: The Method,” offering structured tools to develop rhythmic and harmonic awareness, improvisation, and ensemble leadership. Finally, the culturally responsive approach honors each participant’s musical and cultural identity, making the circle a space for authentic expression, cultural exchange, and inclusion.Participants will learn to create and assign vocal patterns using simple gestures, incorporate body percussion and movement, and explore non-metrical structures and polyrhythms. In addition to live facilitation strategies, the workshop will explore applications of technology, including digital loop creation and remote collaboration through digital audio workstations (DAWs), expanding the accessibility of circle singing for different educational settings. The workshop is designed to be inclusive and adaptable, making it suitable for educators working with K-12 students, university music majors, and community musicians alike. Emphasis will be placed on how circle singing can foster a safe and joyful space where students feel free to take musical risks, collaborate with peers, and grow socially and emotionally through shared musical experience. Reflection and discussion will follow each activity, allowing participants to connect their experience to pedagogical goals, curricular outcomes, and broader educational values.Participants will leave with:A foundational understanding of the structure and process of circle singing;Strategies to lead and scaffold circle songs for diverse groups;Ideas for integrating culturally responsive prompts, movement, and technology;Examples of formative assessments that capture student growth in improvisation, leadership, and emotional awareness. This session aligns with ISME’s mission to promote music education for all and supports educators in creating inclusive, student-centered learning environments that value collaboration, cultural diversity, and emotional well-being. Drawing from the facilitator’s experience as a performer, researcher, and music educator at Berklee College of Music and public schools in Boston, the workshop reflects a blend of rigorous pedagogy and joyful, participatory practice. No prior improvisation experience is necessary—only a willingness to listen, experiment, and sing in community.
