Diversification or Homogenization: An Oral History of Macao Wind Bands (1999-2024)

Innovation with a new productivity in the Era, a new contest and fighting for the resources and authority has been increasing again. Macao, a meaningful and historical city which is now a special administrative district in China, was a Portuguese colony for 442 years from 1557. However, a unique coexistence has been developed in Macao as a multicultural, inclusive city in the world, with various cultures living together with the indigenous. Since 1999, Macao has returned to China as a special administrative region above 25 years. Wind Band as one of the earliest music performance Troupes in Macao (Dai & Hong, 2025), this research aims to investigate that in this recent era developments of the wind band music education in Macao when the period after Macao returned to China. Applying an oral history study and phenomenology as the theoretical framework, using case studies as the research method, this article focuses on three main wind band associations in Macao to review and reflect the ongoing history of Macao wind band music education. Researcher conducts an oral history study with 3 veteran Band directors in Macao who are around or above to 70 years old. Thematic analysis and a qualitative analysis will be used, the results will be shown as below:1. Diversification in music composing creativity. 2. Diversification of the Western music performing skills connected with the Lingnan folklore and the Chinese traditional cultures. 3. Diversification of the connection with the social relationships in Macao. 4. Diversification in the directors’ leadership . 5. Diversification of the passion for Macao wind band music. Results show that a passive diversification brought out a coexistence in the wind band music development and recently also a passive homogenization is happening in this new era. The factors of Performance themes, the audiences, financial funding support, and the development of applying the one country, two systems, as well as the ratio of the ideology of the two systems occupying a dominant position in performance management and music creation, show positive results. Researchers found that more new form of diversity and inclusion in the homogeneous world of the recent new era should be advocated.Keywords: Diversification, Macao Wind band, Oral History
