National Identities in the Tertiary Music Programs of a National University in the Philippines: In Retrospect and Looking Forward
Date & Time
Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 3:05 PM - 3:20 PM
Description
A retrospect on the academic programs of a college of music in the national university in the Philippines, this study presents a historiography of music education and Philippine identities through an analysis of its undergraduate curricula from 1916 to 2016. Data was obtained from undergraduate curricular documents and other related documents of importance to the program implementations, exit requirements during the said period, and interview of people instrumental to the institution of these programs. The study reveals that the undergraduate curricula of the U.P. College of Music have espoused four different ideas of Philippine identities, as represented by four periods, namely: Assimilation of Foreign Influence (1916 to 1946), Reflections of Asianization (1947 to 1968), Streamlining vis à vis Indigenization (1969 to 1999), and Re-evaluation and Multiplicity (2000 to 2016). With the results of this retrospect, the author aims to look forward, imagining new directions of Philippine music education in the context of the changing educational, cultural, and socio-political landscapes.
