Date & Time

Description
This paper will discuss the process and impact of creating the Sing On festival, a gathering of student musicians from campuses that do not offer a music major. This paper addresses the philosophy of the festival’s creation which adapted the following elements of community music: hospitality (Higgins, 2012), relationships (Palazzolo, 2024), compassionate care for all involved (Hendricks, 2018), and the promotion of lifespan music making. The paper will also address the logistics of planning, philosophy of music selection, and the impact of the event on the students and organizers.Colleges without music majors - but that continue to offer music performance options - are increasingly common, and the students who perform at these campuses constitute an integral part of the support system for music. These students go on to form an essential part of the music ecosystem as musicians, consumers, and supporters of music in their community and beyond. While in college, however, these students have different motivations, experiences, and needs compared to campuses with music majors. Activities like Sing On help educators build bridges for students, encouraging them to continue making music throughout their lives. This festival created space for students to engage in a larger ensemble than their home choir, it exposed students to peers with similar motivations for music making, and it created hospitality specifically geared toward the non-major experience. Students reported that the festival left them with a positive feeling about community music making and were looking forward to attending the festival again next year.
