Description
This text discusses the potential for musical learning present in the actions of the HausMusik Brazil Project. Founded in 2007 in Curitiba (Paraná, Brazil), the HausMusik Brazil Project transforms the intimate space of the family living room into a musical stage and a powerful arena for the transmission and acquisition of musical knowledge. This paper presents a synthesis of the results of a qualitative study developed through participant observation of project sessions held at the HausMusik Brazil Extension Center in Maringá, Brazil, affiliated with the State University of Maringá (UEM), between 2023 and 2025.The project has already carried out hundreds of editions, bringing together families and friends who are united through music and sustained by social, emotional, and experiential sharing pillars. During these gatherings, there are musical moments in which attendees appreciate a recital, as well as moments of interactive participation through singing and/or playing instruments, always guided by a musician. The group comprises individuals ranging from professional musicians to people who claim they cannot sing or play; however, all are engaged in musical practice and participate actively through singing and/or playing.Within this context, participant observation data reveal an encounter among different levels of musical knowledge. This “meeting point with/in music” is marked by a complex overlapping of knowledge, resulting in a rich and dense musical experience. The individual experiences consolidated in this setting are characterized by observation (often unconscious), silent exchanges of knowledge, modeled performative examples, as well as shared musical instructions and data. Thus, this space constitutes a site for the transmission and acquisition of musical knowledge, which ultimately becomes embodied as lived knowledge (Larrosa Bondía, 2002).Each edition of the HausMusik Brazil Project promotes a powerful space for musical learning, given that wherever someone is making music, someone else is learning music. This understanding aligns with studies and research in the field of music education, supported by empirical data showing that everyday, seemingly casual musical practices serve as social spaces for the transmission and acquisition of musical knowledge (Kraemer, 2000; Souza, 2009; Souza, 2023). This theoretical perspective, combined with data from participant observation, allows us to affirm that individuals involved in HausMusik simultaneously experience and promote a process that enables both subjective and collective advancement of musical knowledge, impacting each participant’s being and musical knowing.
