Description
Like successful sports teams, thriving string programs foster collaboration, creativity, leadership, and a strong sense of community. As string instructors, how do we balance the challenges of establishing a healthy technical/musical foundation while also inspiring and engaging our students in individualized ways? How do we create a culture where diverse learners are encouraged to develop social and emotional learning when performing and engaging in creative activities? In a non-judgmental environment, how do we reignite excitement about string playing and cultivate inclusive team building in our programs that parallel sports participation? When young string students interact with peers in meaningful ways, they develop the ability to manage emotions, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible decisions. In this session, I will discuss current literature and research involving SEL, leadership skills, mindset, and emotional resilience through a variety of engaging activities implemented at a university affiliated multi-level community string program.Throughout the workshop, string instructors will gain innovative ideas for effective warm-ups, improvisation activities, and composition projects to develop students’ technical skills and encourage belonging and community. Instructors will also acquire a variety of engaging interdisciplinary arts games involving drama and visual arts to spark creativity, develop leadership skills, effective communication, teamwork, and emotional resilience. Throughout the session, I will share personal experiences and vignettes from my current research to highlight various topics of discussion. My hope is that the findings inform string instructors of the importance of supporting our students’ holistic well-being through string playing, while also positively affecting mindset, performance success, program retention, and leadership qualities that extend beyond the classroom walls. Instructors will feel reenergized about their teaching practice and leave the session with a toolbox of ideas to bring into the classroom Monday morning!
