Embedding Musculoskeletal Wellbeing Within the Pre-conservatoire Music Education Curriculum: A Case Report
Date & Time
Monday, July 27, 2026, 2:50 PM - 3:05 PM
Description
The reported rate of playing-related musculoskeletal injuries in professional musicians and conservatoire music students has been consistently high since records began, and there is agreement about the need for ‘Wellbeing’ to be embedded within the curricula of tertiary music education. However, there is no consensus on what, when, or how ‘Wellbeing’ can or should be embedded within pre-conservatoire music education. This is a reflection and first-hand case-report on working practices, specifically, how ‘Wellbeing’ was successfully introduced and then embedded within the curriculum at one UK Junior Conservatoire. For the academic year September 2024 - June 2025, the Head of Department made the decision that ‘Wellbeing’ should and would be prioritised as part of the curriculum. A well-timed, evidence-informed, carefully thought-out intervention was initiated in early September 2024, as INSET training for the staff before the start of the academic year. It was delivered by a Performing Arts Medicine specialist physiotherapist and was overtly and strongly supported by the leadership team. The INSET for staff compriseda) Details of the consistently high incidence of playing-related injuries in conservatoire students and professional orchestral musiciansb) A description of risk factors for these injuriesc) An explanation of how the risks can be reduced.d) A plan for including three targeted questions about wellbeing within all the internal assessments for progression at the Junior ConservatoireThe plan included informing students and their parents/ carers thata) Their assessment would include one of three questions about wellbeingb) Their teachers would teach them the answers to the three questions.Additional video and reading material was created to support the teaching and learning. The same physiotherapist attended the Junior Conservatoire six times during the academic year, where they were a visible presence and were available to individual staff and students, and to ensemble groups. The Head of Department assessed all the students during the academic year, and without exception every single student was able to answer the question about wellbeing that they were asked. Additionally, ‘musculoskeletal wellbeing of musicians’ and the concept of ‘the musical athlete’ are now normalised and part of routine discourse. This low-cost, simple, manageable, evidence-informed initiative, aimed at curriculum development to support best-practice, has enabled ‘musculoskeletal wellbeing of young musicians’ to be part of routine discourse between the main stakeholders of this leading UK Junior Conservatoire. Ongoing evaluation is needed, but this initiative could serve as a template for other organisations.
