Learning by Play an Instrument in a Wind Band: Self-Regulated Learning for Early Music Education
Date & Time

Description
A new transposition of the self-regulated learning model through reading, known as “learning by reading,” developed by Sylvie Cartier, a professor at the University of Montreal (Canada) (Cartier, 2007), is being proposed for learning a musical instrument (Nascimento, 2023). In 2022, the theoretical foundations were developed for the creation of a self-regulated learning model aimed at “learning music by playing a musical instrument.” Empirical studies are necessary to validate the theoretical model, as well as its reproduction in context, in this case, amateur wind bands. This text presents the ongoing research project carried out by the Music Education Research Center PesquisaMus, which, through pseudo-experimental research, aims to analyze the reproduction of the model “Learning music by playing a musical instrument” in two beginner wind bands from two public schools in the city of Sobral, Ceará, as well as to compare the development of these bands with two traditional wind bands that will also reproduce the aforementioned model. The research methodology adopted for the theoretical and empirical foundations was speculative research (Van Der Maren, 1996). This research project is an integral part of an ongoing integrated project entitled: Learning by playing an instrument in a wind band: self-regulated learning for instrumental music education - validation of the theoretical framework in context (Nascimento, 2024). The research is expected to empirically validate the new model of self-regulated learning in music bands, allowing for its widespread dissemination, fostering future studies—especially experimental and longitudinal studies—and resulting in the development of innovative pedagogical strategies that strengthen music education in Brazil and around the world.
