"A good composer is also a good theorist.“1 Schönberg's quote reflects the widespread belief that composing music is complex and requires extensive prior knowledge as well as musical expertise. Indeed, composition as a subject is predominantly offered at higher education institutions—such as conservatories and universities—rather than being integrated into music training programs like instrumental instruction. In many European countries, the introduction to compositional tools (such as chord progressions and scale systems) is typically provided through mandatory theory exams that accompany instrumental exams, which underestimates the creative potential of these tools. As a result, music composition effectively becomes elitist and inaccessible to people with little or no knowledge of music (theory).The aim of my project is to empower children aged 10 to 14, with or without prior musical experience or theory knowledge, through workshops in which they compose their own soundtracks and experiment with sounds, rhythms, and melodies. Through the exploratory process of composing soundtracks, they learn about the role of film music, the leitmotif technique, and the emotional dimensions of music. In the workshop, they are introduced to AI music composition programs and have the opportunity to experience both the possibilities and limitations of AI in music production.Regarding the method, this film music project integrates programs such as AIVA and Hookpad, which offer a graphic notation interface and AI assistive features. Graphical notation allows for a playful and carefree approach to musical material, freeing it from the constraints of conventional rules. AI supports children by bridging gaps in inspiration or technical skill, helping them refine their compositions and simplifying the creative process. Unlike other AI-assisted songwriting projects that are based on lyric prompting, this workshop centers on the creative process of music composition. The film music genre was selected because it resonates with the target group; children of this age are familiar with Hollywood soundtracks, and the genre effectively demonstrates music’s expressive and narrative qualities. Its storytelling aspect also clarifies the composition process for instrumental music by making its abstract elements more tangible.The proposed method has been tested; the workshops conducted, documented, and evaluated. The findings reveal a clear positive impact on children's understanding of musical composition and music's expressive qualities, inspiring them to further explore and create music both with and without AI tools. Notably, children without prior musical experience demonstrated a heightened motivation to learn an instrument and engage with the broader world of music.
