Contemporary educational paradigms are characterized by a persistent tension between formal, teacher-led instruction and informal, student-driven exploration. This dichotomy, however, often creates a false hierarchy that devalues the unstructured, messy, yet essential processes of learning that occur within any designed environment. This study introduces and explores a new conceptual framework, termed quantum learning, to move beyond this binary.We aim to conceptualize and define quantum learning as a pedagogical model that embraces the uncertainty and potentiality inherent in the learning process, we seek to investigate how practicing music educators navigate this quantum environment, and we analyze how music educators identify and make overt the covert learning processes—discovery, approximation, construction, and collaboration—thereby facilitating the transition from students' entangled states of knowledge to moments of concrete understanding. Ultimately, this study aims to build a practical framework for creating more student-centered, responsive, and effective learning environments.This study is grounded in a synthesis of theories from experiential learning, constructivism, and critical pedagogy, which together form the foundation for the quantum learning framework. Our central perspective challenges the traditional formal/informal learning binary (Green, 2008; Cope, 2002), arguing instead for a continuum where both structured and exploratory learning are valued components of a dynamic classroom ecosystem. The framework is built upon the foundational work of John Dewey (1916), who positioned learning as the "constant reorganizing or reconstructing of experience," and David Kolb (1984), who defined learning as "the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience" (p. 38). The quantum learning model frames the primary tension as the negotiation between covert, entangled knowledge and overt, formalized understanding.The analysis of the interviews with the four music educators revealed a complex and dynamic negotiation between establishing pedagogical structure and fostering student-led exploration. The findings are organized into four major themes that align with the conceptual framework of quantum learning: (1) Setting the Stage: The Dialectic of Structure and Freedom; (2) The Influence of Outside Worlds: Integrating Prior Knowledge; (3) Facilitating Convergences: Making Covert Learning Overt; and (4) The Human Element: Teacher Presence and Navigating Inequity.Figure 1.
