To conduct qualitative social research requires not only a declarative knowledge of research methods and methodology, but also a set of honed, practical, applied skills. Foundational skills such as reflexivity, enacting ethical researcher aware positionality, and engaging in critical reflection are notoriously slippery requiring more than prior reading to translate from theory and philosophy into practice. While literature abounds on research methods and highlights the disparity between theory, skill development, and practice, little practical guidance exists to support researchers in developing these applied skills before undertaking fieldwork.This workshop introduces clinical mindfulness as an innovation that can practically help researchers bridge philosophical theory and the practical methods of crafting qualitative research in music education. Drawing on autoethnographic and phenomenological traditions, it examines how clinical mindfulness—particularly as practised in dialectical behaviour therapy—can assist researchers in navigating the complexities of reflexivity, bracketing, and researcher positionality. Practical skills in mindfulness will be introduced and developed with participants with the aim of fostering deeper researcher awareness and ethical engagement. Specifically, the session will focus on the skills and practices of reflexivity and researcher positionality with relevance for both emerging and experienced researchers.Two separate research projects are used to illustrate how mindfulness has practically supported researchers in confronting difficult realisations and methodological challenges, bridging and uniting philosophical theory with research methods practice, and executing meaningful, rigorous, and reflexive research. This work contributes to a growing dialogue on relational methodologies and the evolving role of the researcher in building bridges between music, education, and research with impact.
