788 - Revitalizing Auditory Abilities: The Impact of Online Music Activities on Older Adults With Hearing Loss

Around 30% of individuals aged 60 + experience some degree of hearing loss1 which is often associated with disengagement from leisure activities2. Hearing aids are commonly used to compensate for auditory impairment, but despite advances in technology, users still report discontent with sound quality when listening to music3. Engagement in musical activities throughout life could have a protective effect on hearing abilities4. Musical education could therefore be a promising tool for hearing rehabilitation. The main objective of the project was to develop online music activities for older adults with hearing loss and explore their impact on music perception.27 older adults (60-89 years old) with a mean PTA for 3-4-6-8 kHz of 67±12 dB HL were assigned to piano learning (G1; n=8), music listening (G2; n=11) or discussion (G3; n=8) activities. Exclusion criteria included cognitive impairment, anxiety or depressive disorders, visual impairment, and severe osteoarthritis. Activities were held weekly (1 h) and included basic piano lessons (G1), guided music listening (G2), and structured discussions on predetermined topics (G3). Participants completed a musical perception assessment battery before (T1) and after (T2) completion of the online activities (12 weeks). A shortened version of the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia (MBEA)5 was used to evaluate three components of music processing (scale, contour and rhythm) and an instrument discrimination task was used to evaluate timbre perception4. 9 normal-hearing adults completed the same tasks at the same two time points, but without training. Performance comparison across time confirmed the absence of a practice effect, confirming that any performance changes observed in the experimental groups could be attributable to the intervention.Since no significant difference between groups were found at either time points (T1 & T2) for each task, combined data from all three groups were compared across time points. There was a significant improvement between T1 & T2 for the MBEA score (p < 0.001) with a very large effect size (0.801) and instrument discrimination score (p = .017) with a large effect size (0.597).These preliminary findings suggest that all proposed activities have the potential to significantly enhance melody, rhythm, and timbre recognition among older adults with hearing loss, with a substantial effect size. This was unexpected, as only musical activities were hypothesized to produce such an effect. We hypothesize that this improvement may be related to the active engagement of auditory attention or to human interaction which are common features across activities.
