Creative Piano Ensemble: Community of Shared Discovery AbstractThis poster presents an innovative approach to group piano teaching that reimagines the classroom as a community of shared discovery, where creativity, independence, and empathy develop through collaborative music-making. Implemented in a large public elementary school serving a culturally diverse population, the Creative Piano Ensemble engages more than 600 learners annually. The program transforms group piano instruction into a space of shared leadership and musical dialogue, empowering students who might otherwise experience music learning in isolation.The teaching model integrates multisensory and peer-supported learning to foster both technical growth and imagination. Through kinesthetic, visual, and peer-led activities—such as rhythm scarves, color-coded notation, and the Piano Helper System—the classroom evolves into a Piano Orchestra where learners rotate among melody, rhythm, and harmony roles. These tactile and social experiences invite students to experience music as movement, color, and collective expression, bridging cognition with creativity and emotion.Grounded in sociocultural and social learning theories, this framework positions interaction, observation, and guided participation as central to musical development. Modeling and peer scaffolding strengthen self-efficacy and understanding within each learner’s zone of proximal development. Observation across 240 group lessons and reflective teacher journals revealed consistent growth in musical literacy, tone quality, posture, and intrinsic motivation. Students also demonstrated authentic creativity through improvisation and motif composition, showing that ensemble collaboration deepens both technical mastery and expressive freedom.The Creative Piano Ensemble offers a scalable, inclusive model for revitalizing group piano education in schools with limited resources. By combining multisensory tools, peer mentorship, and ensemble creativity, it transforms the piano classroom into a living community of artistic and emotional growth.
