Background: Freshman Seminars are small-class seminar courses specifically designed for freshmen. They were first offered by Harvard University in 1959. The aim was to reverse the long-neglected situation of undergraduate teaching and improve the quality of undergraduate teaching, fulfilling the functions of adaptive and academic transformation for freshmen, which has been generally recognized by relevant researchers.In the fall semester of 2017, "Music: From Experience to Expression", as the only art general education course among the Freshman Seminars initially offered by Northeast Normal University, has undergone 14 rounds of teaching practice so far and has been continuously improved and optimized.Research questions:（1）What are the values and significance of teaching music general education courses to students in non-art normal universities?（2）How to develop music general education courses for non-art normal university students?（3）How to select and apply specific teaching contents and methods?（4）After 14 rounds of teaching practice, what is the teaching effect?Research methods: During the 14 rounds of teaching practice, questionnaires and interviews were conducted among all students before and after the implementation of the course to understand the performance of students' accomplishments, test the effect of the course implementation, and put forward suggestions for course improvement.Research results: The Freshman Seminar course "Music: From Experience to Expression" aims at "liberation, creation, and development". By combining teaching contents such as excellent traditional Chinese culture and applying teaching methods like "the discovery method" + "learning by doing", "the creation method" + "the practice method", and "field teaching" + "field experience", it has enabled students to change from being timid to being composed, from being passive to being confident, and from being at a loss to being enthusiastic and vivid. Meanwhile, students' willingness to get along with others, as well as their learning styles, thinking modes, and expression ways have all changed.
