Description
The Clarinet warm-up routine provides a series of exercises to consistently establish clarinet fundamentals before starting to practice technical exercises and repertoire. These exercises are the result of the author’s experience as a clarinet teacher and reflections on the theme “warm-up” from the study: “Pedagogical warm-up approaches for clarinet: analyses of teaching materials (2019) carried out at the Federal University of Santa Maria (Brazil). The research led to the idea of producing a compact and consistent daily clarinet warm-up routine. The method is divided into five parts. The first is a basic sequence of exercises for physical stretching, which is so important to avoid injuries. It has several benefits, including relieving muscle tension, relaxing the body and mind, increasing flexibility and body awareness, and improving posture. The second is a set of breathing exercises, involving techniques for inhaling and exhaling. Proper breathing technique and control contribute to sound quality, sound support, intonation, volume and flexibility. Next, finally, there is a series of exercises for each of the three pillars: Sonority (embouchure) exercises cover all registers of the clarinet, to develop lip flexibility while maintaining a firm yet supple embouchure. Technique (fingers) exercises included scales and arpeggios with different articulations. They should be played at a comfortable tempo, which can be increased as quality and confidence are gained. Articulation (tongue) exercises explore a wide range of articulation variations and create autonomy in tongue movement, developing articulation skills and a colorful sound and timbre. The exercises should be performed daily, preferably for at least 30 minutes. At the end of the routine there is a fingering chart. Including a clarinet warm-up routine will bring many benefits to the performance. When practicing the warm up exercises, the clarinet player should focus on the goal: 1% better every day.
