Date & Time

Description
This presentation explores how unexpected learning encounters—such as emotional surges, spontaneous improvisations, misreadings, refusals, and cross-disciplinary influences—can become fertile pedagogical material in piano teaching. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of a-signifying rupture and rhizomatic thought, this study employs autoethnographic and artistic research methods to examine how unpredictability is not an obstacle to learning but a site of emergence.Rather than treating such moments as disruptions that need correction, they are reimagined as opportunities for nonlinear exploration, emotional development, and the formation of creative identity. Examples include students misinterpreting rhythms in meaningful ways, improvising new endings to classical works, or rejecting repertoire that lacks personal resonance. When embraced, these moments generate new trajectories—maps that reflect the student’s lived experience, rather than traces of a predetermined path. This rhizomatic approach challenges conventional pedagogies that prioritize linear progression and technical mastery. It reframes the teaching environment as a dynamic constellation of bodies, memories, gestures, emotions, and tools, where both teacher and learner actively co-construct meaning through rupture, repetition, and reinvention. The findings suggest that by shifting from instructional control to relational openness, educators can embrace the unexpected as integral to artistic and personal growth.
