Emphasizing learning by ear and democratic exchange over formal instruction, Ethno is one of the world’s largest non-formal music education programs. Founded in 1990 under Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI), it brings together young musicians aged 15 to 30 to share folk, traditional, and world repertoires by teaching each other orally in collaborative workshops. These activities exemplify how non-formal methodologies create interactive and integrative learning experiences that contribute to inclusion and global music connection.This study positions Ethno within broader discussions of global folk music activities, offering insights into how collective music-making can celebrate cultural uniqueness while ensuring inclusion, nurturing confidence, and supporting the career development of young musicians. Ethno merges artistic outcomes with youth development, treating music both as a cultural practice and as a tool for community building. The study examines how organizers prepare an environment that enables participants to work creatively in workshops where all feel safe and respected in their cultural identities.Particular attention is given to Ethno’s foundation in multiculturalism and peer-to-peer learning, with a focus on the system of “Artistic Mentors.” The experienced musicians support participants by facilitating arrangements, organizing rehearsals, and guiding musical processes. Beyond their artistic responsibilities, they safeguard the social and emotional wellbeing of the group, ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment. Through these practices, Ethno demonstrates how traditional, folk, and world music can be revitalized and sustained among younger generations while cultivating musicianship, leadership, and intercultural competence.
