L’Ensemble de violoncelles de Montréal presents Indian classical ragas passed from Pandit Ravi Shankar to sarod artist Aditya Verma, and now taught to EVM’s young cellists. Performing alongside Aditya Verma, tabla player Subir Dev, and OSM cellist/EVM teacher Geneviève Guimond, the ensemble explores a musical tradition rooted in melody, rhythm, listening, and oral transmission. EVM is a registered charity that provides intensive cello training to talented children in Montréal without financial barriers. Students have the opportunity to study with three Montreal Symphony Orchestra cellists, while receiving scholarships that include lessons, ensemble training, performance opportunities, and the use of a cello. The program combines rigorous technical training with creativity: EVM students have won awards in performance and composition, written and recorded original music, and released more than 100 songs and compositions. A central part of EVM’s model is Practice-Assisted Learning (PAL), an at-home practice system created by the program. PAL gives each student a personalized daily practice playlist drawn from thousands of interactive teacher videos. Students practice with guidance, their playing is recorded as they work, and teachers review their submissions and give daily feedback. This makes at-home practice more structured, less lonely, and more effective, while allowing each student to progress at their own pace and giving teachers a clear view of their daily effort.
